Val d'Isere
Probably the most famous ski resort in the world
with one of the best snow records in Europe. Val d'Isère links with
Tignes to form 'L' Éspace Killy' which is 10 miles from end to end.
The quality and quantity of snow make it a skier's Mecca and many
people won't even consider skiing anywhere but Val d'Isère.
Val d'Isère has developed substantially but
tastefully over the years with all new buildings being finished in
wood and local stone. The village has gradually become a town with
excellent facilities for skier and non-skier alike. There are plenty
of shops selling the very latest in ski gear and gadgets which seem
invaluable when in the holiday spirit. Non-skiing guests or those
taking a break from the slopes can browse the extensive range of
exclusive shops or take part in a wide range of alternative relaxing
activities.
Unlike many other French ski resorts,
Val d'Isere is a proper town, not just a purpose built ski
complex. As a result, it has a bustling and lively atmosphere
centred on the wide main street that runs the length of the town. It
has a weekly market selling mainly clothes, local cheeses and
saucissons.
There are numerous restaurants and bars for a
quiet drink or energetic bars for après ski with live music, and two
night clubs for those with the stamina. It also has the usual
leisure facilities including spas, swimming pool, an open air ice
rink and a cinema showing some of the latest films.
